José Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara åkte till Washington DC och talade med USAs kongress, för att be dem om militärt stöd. Medan han försökte få dem att hjälpa honom (han misslyckades) blev Miguel allt mer nervös. Han blev orolig att han skulle bli arresterad, så han gick till sin bror, som kände sheriffen, och bad honom övertyga polisen att släppa ut 80 frihetskämpar som satt inspärrade. Sedan ringde prästen i klockorna, och höll ett känt och eldande tal till sin församling, ståendes på kyrkans trappa.
Grito de Dolores blev startskottet för Mexikos frihetskrig mot Spanien. På nationaldagen, som firas till minne av detta, reciterar Mexikos president Miguel Hidalgo y Costillas tal.
