Idag är det årsdagen av Alfonso de Albuquerque (åter)erövring av Goa från Bijapursultanatet den 25 november 1510. År 1509 blev Albuquerque utnämnd till guvernör över Portugisiska Indien och började genast omtolka de order han fått från kungen i Portugal. Han förberedde ett angrepp på Suez för att stoppa vad portugiserna (korrekt) antog var en upprustning av en flotta som skulle angripa Portugals intressen i regionen. Eftersom marskalken Dom Fernando Coutinho stupade i strid vid ett försök att inta Calicut, hade Albuquerque full kontroll över trupperna.
På vägen mötte de den mäktige piraten Timoji från Malabar, som föreslog att flottan istället skulle segla mot Goa och stoppa en annan militär upprustning i området. Sultanen av Bijapur hade nyligen avlidit, och hinduerna i Timojis gamla hemstad kokade av vrede mot de muslimska erövrarna.
I februari 1510 intog de staden, men tvingades retirera på grund av monsunen och en gigantisk armé, som hade frigjorts genom en vapenvila med Vijayanagarariket. I november samma år var de dock tillbaka. Det blev en förvirrad strid, där båda sidor vid olika tillfällen försökte både öppna och stänga stadsportarna. De muslimska civila som inte redan hade flytt dödades och kastades till flodens ”ödlor”, och deras tillhörigheter plundrades. De hinduiska kvarteren skonades enligt order från Albuquerque.
