Den 21a januari 1958 tog kabinen på ett B-52-plan eld i närheten av Thule-flygbasen på västra Grönland. Besättningen, förutom en som inte hade en katapultstol, lyckades skjuta ut sig. Planet kraschade någon mil utanför basen och exploderade.
Exploderade gjorde även många vapen ombord. Vid det här tillfället var planet lastat med bland annat fyra B28-bomber. Var och en av dessa pjäser vägde ungefär ett ton, och vätebombs-stridsspetsen var kapabel till mellan 70 kiloton till 1,45 megaton trotyls sprängkraft.
Det radioaktiva skrotet spreds över hela Wolstenholme-viken. Ett omfattande uppstädningsarbete krävde flera månader för att göra området säkert igen.
Vid arbetets slut hade man räknat in tre av de fyra kärnvapnen. Man vet än i dag inte var den sista bomben befinner sig. USA har haft många incidenter med kärnvapen, som antingen skadats, släppts av misstag (men lyckligtvis hade utlösningsmekanismen inte fungerat) eller försvunnit.
