Den 4:e oktober 1883 öppnade belgiska Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits Orientexpressen. Under dess livstid skulle både sträckningen och typen av vagnar skilja sig kraftigt. Till en början gick tågen från Paris till Konstantinopel (Istanbul), med byte till båt i Varna i dagens Bulgarien. Till att börja med gick tåget med postvagnar och passagerarvagnar med träbänkar, utan restaurang. Resan som Hercule Poirot gör i Agatha Christies berömda bok är med Simplon-expressen, som hade fokus på lyx och komfort, och gick genom nyare tunnlar som tog tåget förbi Venedig.
Nästan från början matchade LSWR (London and South Western Railway) sina tåg London-Dover med färjeförbindelse, där andra tåg matchade sträckan Calais-Paris. Så redan 1883 kunde man resa London-Calas, Paris, Strasbourg, München, Wien, Budapest, Bukarest, Varna, Konstantinopel på en biljett.
Orientexpressen lades ned 2009. Förutom avbrott för världskrigen kördes expresstågen under hela den tiden.
