Den åttonde januari 1958 vann Bobby Fischer det amerikanska mästerskapet i schack, och erövrade titeln som amerikansk mästare för första gången. Han var då fjorton år gammal. Varje gång han deltog i dessa mästerskap skulle han komma att vinna dem.
Fischers schackgeni går inte att missta sig på. Om han fokuserat mer på spelet hade han mycket möjligt kunnat vara den främste spelaren genom tiderna. Men det skulle visa sig att hans plågade sinne inte skulle tillåta honom.
Hans största bedrift var hans VM-vinst mot den sovjetiske stormästaren på Island, mitt under kalla kriget. Matchen var gastkramande, där Fischer först hotat att inte dyka upp eftersom vinstpengarna var för små, lämnat walkover på vissa ronder för att han inte gillade kamerablixtarna, och begärde att resten av matchen skulle utspelas i ett stängt rum (där han slutligen segrade).
Fischer gled in och ut ur schackvärlden. Han spelade kontroversiella matcher trots embargon, som betydde att han kunde se fram emot en arrestering om han återvände till USA. Han uppfann nya mer spännande typer av schack. Han gick med i en dödskult. Han sökte politisk asyl i en rad länder.
Strax efter 11:e septemberattackerna i New York hyllade Fischer attackerna, hoppades att George W. Bush skulle dö, och alla judar sättas i fängelse.
Bobby Fischer dog av njursvikt på Island 2008, efter att han vägrat att motta vård. Han blev 64 år gammal.
