Skärtorsdagen, den 20 mars 1600, ställdes ett makabert skådespel i ordning på Stora Torget i Linköping. Fem svenska adelsmän, lojala till avsatte kung Sigismund, föll för yxan i vad vi idag känner som Linköpings blodbad. Kung Karl IX, segraren i slaget vid Stångebro åren innan, befäste därmed sin makt och säkrade Sveriges protestantiska framtid.
Vid sin fars, Johan IIIs, död blev Sigismund kung över Sverige 1592. Då var han redan kung över det mäktiga Polen-Litauen. Året därpå reste han till Sverige för att krönas. Men eftersom Sverige vid den tiden hade en protestantisk kyrka (efter farfar Gustav Vasas reformation), fick Sigismund skriva på en försäkran att han inte skulle tillsätta katoliker till viktiga poster, och respektera Svenska Kyrkan.
Trots detta tillsattes flera katoliker av den nya kungen. Han satte till en grupp rådsherrar till att styra de nya rikena, och förbjöd dem att tillkalla en Riksdag på egen hand.
Kungens farbror, Hertig Karl i Finland, fann sig inte i detta, tillkallade en Riksdag, utropades till Rikföreståndare och tog upp vapen mot Sigismund. Vid slaget vid Stångebro 1598 besegrades Sigismund, och avsattes som kung i Sverige.
Bara några decennier senare, åren 1655-1660, skulle Karl X (barnbarn till Karl IX) föra ett otroligt destruktivt krig mot Polen, som än idag refereras till som ”Den Svenska Syndafloden”, eller ”Potop” i Polen.
